International Handbook of Research on Conceptual Change PDF Free

International Handbook of Research on Conceptual Change PDF
By:Stella Vosniadou
Published on 2008 by Taylor & Francis

The study of conceptual change traces its heritage to the notions of paradigm (networks of shared beliefs, concepts, practices) and paradigm shift made famous by Thomas Kuhn in his book, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. Kuhn¿s work was quickly linked to developmental psychology (how knowledge develops) and to science education (teaching big, new ideas). This book is the first comprehensive review of the conceptual change movement and of the impressive research it has spawned on how knowledge develops and can be taught in different content areas. Because of its interdisciplinary focus chapter authors were instructed to write in a manner comprehensible to researchers and students from different fields. The International Handbook of Research on Conceptual Change consists of twenty-seven chapters that clarify the nature of conceptual change research, describes its most important findings and demonstrates their importance for education. It is organized into six sections that include detailed discussions of key theoretical and methodological issues, the roots of conceptual change research in the philosophy and history of science, mechanisms of conceptual change, and learner characteristics. It also contains chapters that describe conceptual change research in the content areas such as physics, astronomy, biology, medicine and health, and history. A particular focus is given to students¿ difficulties in learning more advanced and counter-intuitive concepts.

This textbook is founded on the idea of learning as knowledge construction and the implications of this for the nature of knowledge and for the way it is acquired. The first section examines the nature of knowledge from several perspectives. The dominant theme is that views of learning closely relate to views of knowledge. The second section considers what it is to be knowledgeable. Expertise and types of knowledge are considered using examples from different phases of education and subject areas. The final part of the book focuses on learning within domains and what this means from different subject perspectives. Science Teaching explains how history and philosophy of science contributes to the resolution of persistent theoretical, curricular, and pedagogical issues in science education. It shows why it is essential for science teachers to know and appreciate the history and philosophy of the subject they teach and how this knowledge can enrich science instruction and enthuse students in the subject. Through its historical perspective, the book reveals to students, teachers, and researchers the foundations of scientific knowledge and its connection to philosophy, metaphysics, mathematics, and broader social influences including the European Enlightenment, and develops detailed arguments about constructivism, worldviews and science, multicultural science education, inquiry teaching, values, and teacher education. Fully updated and expanded, the 20th Anniversary Edition of this classic text, featuring four new chapters—The Enlightenment Tradition; Joseph Priestley and Photosynthesis; Science, Worldviews and Education; and Nature of Science Research—and 1,300 references, provides a solid foundation for teaching and learning in the field.

Constructivist Teaching PDF

Published on 1995 by

This fastback examines the theory and practice of constructivist teaching and suggests how teachers can decide what form of constructivist teaching they might want to use. Constructivist teaching theory is explored under the headings |knowledge| and |humans.| According to constructivist theory, knowledge is constructed by humans, it is conjectural and fallible, and it grows through exposure. Humans have a built-in aversion to disorder and have internal knowledge structures that guide perceptions, understanding, and action. Five elements of one conception of constructivist teaching practice include; activating prior knowledge, acquiring knowledge, understanding knowledge, using knowledge, and reflecting knowledge. The four types of constructivist teaching that emerge from these five elements are application, discovery, extension, and invention. Examples of these types are given. The next section focuses on beliefs and their importance in deciding about constructivist teaching and which forms to use. In the last sections, threats to implementation and the future of constructivist teaching are discussed.

Teaching Social Studies in Middle and Secondary Schools PDF Free

Teaching Social Studies in Middle and Secondary Schools PDF
By:Candy Beal,Cheryl Mason Bolick,Peter H. Martorella
Published on 2009 by Allyn & Bacon

This comprehensive introduction to teaching social studies to middle and secondary school students includes many new ideas for teaching in our 21stcentury classrooms. Continuing the tradition of social studies innovator Peter Martorella and taking a constructivist approach, the authors address current issues such as diversity, technology, inclusion, and teacher certification. Martorella believed that the fundamental purpose of social studies should be the development of reflective, competent, and concerned citizens. The goal of the book is to assist preservice and inservice middle and secondary teachers in becoming more effective teachers of social studies. To do this, the authors draw on theory, research, and the wisdom of experienced teachers. The text is organized in three parts: the origins of social studies, developing reflective and concerned citizens, and analyzing and improving the teaching of social studies. The book continues to address the need of helping students to develop a global perspective and become open-minded reflective citizens of the world. The blend of teacher insight, current research findings, and well-grounded theories give new and experienced educators the foundation they need to nurture and sustain effective social studies instruction.

Educational Neuroscience, Constructivist Learning, and the Mediation of Learning and Creativity in the 21st Century PDF Free

Educational Neuroscience, Constructivist Learning, and the Mediation of Learning and Creativity in the 21st Century PDF
By:Layne Kalbfleisch
Published on 2015-05-28 by Frontiers Media SA

The advent of educational neuroscience, a transdisciplinary exercise emerging from cognitive neuroscience and educational psychology, is the examination of physiological processes that undermine, support, and enhance the capacities to learn and create. The physiological underpinnings of learning and creativity each impact human ability and performance and mediate the processes of becoming educated, expert, and valued. Evidence of learning provides support to an ongoing canon, process, system, field or domain, while evidence of creativity results in an elaboration or departure from an ongoing canon, process, system, field, or domain. Educational neuroscience extends a challenge to scholars from multiple contexts to engage in the characterization and exploration of human ability and performance in these realms. The role of context, both environmental and interoceptive, is an integral part of efforts in educational neuroscience and in theories of constructivist learning to contribute ecologically valid insight to the pragmatic processes of learning and creativity. Examination at this level of specificity is vital to our ability to educate and support human potential in the 21st century. This Research Topic examines the neural basis of cognitive states and processes that influence knowledge and skill acquisition tied to the demonstration of human ability and performance across individual differences and in multiple contexts including STEM learning and the arts.

By:Robert D. Heslep
Published on 2002-03-01 by Edwin Mellen Pr

After a critical discussion of several current positions in educational philosophy, the book focuses on communication, reason, and voluntary action as sources of principles that are integral to philosophy and education. The work applies its foundational principles in two ways. It shows how they compare with the educational views of Social Constructivism and of Critical Theory. It also devotes a chapter-length discussion to several curricular topics likely to be facing educators in the future: higher-order-thinking skills, multicultural education, and higher technology.

Fear of Knowledge PDF
By:Paul Boghossian
Published on 2006-02-23 by Clarendon Press

Relativist and constructivist conceptions of truth and knowledge have become orthodoxy in vast stretches of the academic world in recent times. In his long-awaited first book, Paul Boghossian critically examines such views and exposes their fundamental flaws. Boghossian focuses on three different ways of reading the claim that knowledge is socially constructed one as thesis about truth and two about justification. And he rejects all three. The intuitive, common-sense view is that there is a way the world is that is independent of human opinion; and that we are capable of arriving at beliefs about how it is that are objectively reasonable, binding on anyone capable of appreciating the relevant evidence regardless of their social or cultural perspective. Difficult as these notions may be, it is a mistake to think that philosophy has uncovered powerful reasons for rejecting them. Paul Boghossian, in his long-awaited first book, sweeps away relativist claims that there is no such thing as objective truth or knowledge, but only truth or knowledge from a particular perspective. This short, lucid, witty book shows that philosophy provides rock-solid support for common-sense against the relativists. It will prove provocative reading throughout the discipline and beyond.

Situated Learning PDF
By:Jean Lave,Etienne Wenger
Published on 1991-09-27 by Cambridge University Press

In this important theoretical treatist, Jean Lave, anthropologist, and Etienne Wenger, computer scientist, push forward the notion of situated learning - that learning is fundamentally a social process. The authors maintain that learning viewed as situated activity has as its central defining characteristic a process they call legitimate peripheral participation (LPP). Learners participate in communities of practitioners, moving toward full participation in the sociocultural practices of a community. LPP provides a way to speak about crucial relations between newcomers and old-timers and about their activities, identities, artefacts, knowledge and practice. The communities discussed in the book are midwives, tailors, quartermasters, butchers, and recovering alcoholics, however, the process by which participants in those communities learn can be generalised to other social groups.

Theories in Adult Learning and Education PDF
By:Paul BĂ©langer
Published on 2011-02-09 by Verlag Barbara Budrich

Adult Learning and Education The graduate student guide in adult education explores theories of adult learning and adult education participation. It provides a frame of reference for understanding the development of a rapidly evolving field and for enhancing knowledge and competencies in this professional domain. The publication is divided into two sections: a section on adult learning theories and a section on adult education participation theories. If Adult Learning and Education (ALE) is now a recognised professional field, the theoretical perspectives, underlying practices and policies draw on a variety of academic disciplines. Various theories of learning and of adult education participation shape the practice and the “engineering” of adult learning. In the first section, this study guide provides a review of the most important learning theories, including behaviourist, cognitive, and constructivist approaches, their modern development, as well as specific developments in adult education theory. The second section examines the psychological and sociological theoretical backgrounds of adult education participation in order to understand the factors at work in participation patterns along the adult life course and between different social contexts. Observing the relativity of social reproduction allows to identify the conditions and variables that need to be addressed in order to alter prevailing trends.
